Exams Catalunya ELT Conference: Helping students prove their skills to the world
We’ve been lucky enough to attend the Exams Catalunya English Language Teaching (ELT) Conference for several years. After two years of running workshops, we’re delighted to be sponsoring the 7th event for the very first time.
Where: Palauet Casades, Barcelona
When: 16th November

A focus on skills
This vibrant one-day event provides the ELT community with the chance to come together and learn about many different facets of language teaching from experts in the field.
Each year, the workshops and talks coalesce around a theme. This time, it’s all about skills: how to assess skills, how to improve skills and, most importantly, how to demonstrate those skills to the world. The talks and workshops fall into five broad categories:
- Young Learners/Teens
- Learners and learning
- Management
- Assessment
- Teachers
Whether your focus is on improving your students’ exam technique or broadening your own professional skill set, you’re sure to pick up some useful insights from the ELT professionals working in various areas of the industry.
Both our directors, Dan and George, are running workshops as part of the conference.
Carving out your career as a writer: mistakes, madness and mystery
George, our Creative Director, talks about making the career shift from teaching to writing. This practical workshop offers concrete advice on how to develop your writing skills, gain experience and carve out a new role for yourself as an ELT writer.
The art of persuasion: communicating successfully with your teachers
In the Management strand of the programme, Dan shares the insights he gained during his time as director of one of Barcelona’s largest language schools. Communicating effectively with your team can streamline the organisational challenges of running a language school, and this workshop will give you some effective strategies and resources to improve your powers of persuasion.
Plenary speakers
This year at the Exams Catalunya ELT Conference, the plenary talks feature some big names in the industry.
Karen Saxby, a prolific writer and teacher, will be discussing how to equip our young learners with the skills they’ll need to thrive in an AI-dominated future, with a focus on creative, collaborative and communicative classroom work.
Miranda Hamilton will host a talk about the relationship between technology, language teaching and learner autonomy.
Scott Thornbury will be looking at the way we deliver language teaching, challenging some assumptions and exploring new approaches.
Finally, Rachael Roberts, teacher trainer, author and qualified coach, will be delivering a talk about avoiding burnout. You’ll learn how to spot the signs and cope with the pressures and demands of teaching.
And there’s more…
You can see the rest of the conference programme here. Dan and George are in good company at the conference, with a host of insightful and relevant talks and workshops.
If you work in education or in the ELT industry then be sure to come along. You’ll gain a new perspective on the classroom experience, get lots of new ideas for keeping young learners engaged and interested, and leave the conference feeling inspired and excited about some new teaching challenges!
